According to a national report (Poverty in Australia, 2020), more than 1 in 6 children and young people are living in poverty in Australia which affects their quality of life and ability to make the most out of their education. For some in the Muslim community, these conditions are worsened by their history as refugees, asylum seekers or migrants which limits them from accessing proper working rights and financial aid from the government to support their families.
Through the Back-to-School program, we aim to supplement aid provided by the State Governments which provides a set grant for children from low-income families at the beginning of the school year, like in New South Wales. We hope to revive the love of learning for Muslim children and families in the community who would otherwise be limited by financial disadvantages. We aim to achieve this by providing direct support to families to help ensure education is accessible to children who their family are not able to afford basic needs for the school year.
The Back-to-School program is structured whereby NZF provides grants directly to families in need to finance and empower their children to go to school with everything they need to start the school year in a positive manner. We hope that this program encourages Australian Muslim families, and their children, do not shy away from starting or continuing their education due to their financial difficulties.
Support provided through this program includes, but is not limited to, financial aid to access learning opportunities or resources. We especially encourage families and children in the following circumstances to apply for this program - asylum seeker/refugee, single parent, families affected by domestic violence and/or widows.
The application and validation process is done by the NZF Team with confidentiality. Any information given will only be used to determine the best way we can help you.
