From Refugee to Refuge

August 8, 2024

Hassoun, a recent refugee from Syria, moved to Australia with his wife and six young children just six months ago. Settling into a new country was a challenge, but finding a place to call home was a priority. However, furnishing that home proved to be another hurdle. Unable to afford the furniture outright, Hassoun had no choice but to purchase it on a payment plan.

As time passed, the weight of those monthly payments began to strain their already tight budget. With six young children to care for, Hassoun and his wife, who rely on Centrelink payments, struggled to cover their rent and the furniture debt. The stress of trying to provide for their family while keeping up with these expenses became overwhelming.

In need of help, Hassoun reached out to us at the National Zakat Foundation. After assessment, we determined that Hassoun and his family were eligible for Zakat. Thanks to your Zakat, NZF was able to help Hassoun manage his furniture debt and provide rent support, easing the financial burden on his family.

Hassoun’s story is one of resilience in the face of adversity, and a reminder of how vital community support is for those starting fresh in a new country. Your generosity has given Hassoun and his family the stability they need as they continue to build their lives in Australia.
