Bringing Shaafa Home
How Your Zakat Transformed a Family’s Crisis into Hope
At the National Zakat Foundation (NZF), we often witness how local Zakat funds serve as a lifeline for those facing unimaginable hardship. Recently, we had the privilege of stepping in to support a family in crisis—a moment that reinforced the power of our community’s generosity.
A Father's Desperate Plea
Shaafa was set to return home to Brisbane, but just days before her flight, everything changed. She was rushed to a hospital in Jakarta with severe throat pain and worsening symptoms. As her condition deteriorated, doctors transferred her to a specialised hospital for further investigation. What followed was a whirlwind of shifting diagnoses, uncertainty, and heartbreak.
Her family, miles away in Australia, felt helpless. When the final test results came in, their worst fears were confirmed: Shaafa had leukaemia.
A Race Against Time
Doctors in Jakarta made it clear—she needed urgent treatment in Australia. However, the reality of getting her home was daunting. A commercial flight wasn’t an option due to her fragile condition. The only viable solution was a medical evacuation flight—costing anywhere between AU$150,000 to AU$300,000.
Her father, overwhelmed and desperate, turned to his community for guidance. That’s when a group of compassionate individuals, including medical professionals and close friends, mobilised to find a way. As word spread, members of the Brisbane Muslim community began raising funds, but the full amount seemed unachievable within the short timeframe.
NZF Steps In
When we at NZF heard about Shaafa’s situation, we knew we had to act. Time was critical—every passing day without treatment amplified the risks. After liaising with Queensland Children’s Hospital and medical evacuation providers, we made a decision: NZF would cover the entire cost of Shaafa’s emergency transfer to Australia.
We assured the family that securing her medical evacuation was the priority. Even if the community’s fundraising efforts didn’t reach the full amount, NZF would take responsibility.
When Every Moment Counts
In under 12 hours, everything was in place. By the next day, Shaafa and her father were on a specialised medical flight back to Australia. Upon landing, she was rushed straight to Queensland Children’s Hospital, where her treatment began immediately.
Alhamdulillah, within days, her condition stabilised. The burden that once seemed impossible to bear was lifted, allowing her family to focus solely on supporting her recovery.
The Power of Local Zakat
This is why local Zakat matters. Because of the unwavering support of our community, NZF was able to respond swiftly, ensuring that Shaafa received the care she desperately needed. Your Zakat didn’t just provide financial relief—it saved a life.
This is the impact of giving locally. This is the power of standing together.
May Allah bless everyone who contributed to this effort, and may He grant Shaafa a full and complete recovery. Ameen.
